I am in need of music that would flow
Over my fretful, feeling fingertips,
Over my bitter-tainted, trembling lips,
With melody, deep, clear, and liquid-slow.
Oh, for the healing swaying, old and low,
Of some song sung to rest the tired dead,
A song to fall like water on my head,
And over quivering limbs, dream flushed to glow!
There is a magic made by melody:
A spell of rest, and quiet breath, and cool
Heart, that sinks through fading colors deep
To the subaqueous stillness of the sea,
And floats forever in a moon-green pool,
Held in the arms of rhythm and of sleep.

A spell of rest, and quiet breath, and cool

To the subaqueous stillness of the sea,
And floats forever in a moon-green pool,
Held in the arms of rhythm and of sleep.
"Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything." (Plato). Music can be an escape from the hardships of life. It can be that "happy place" for some people who need it. Music can be like a medicine, healing a soul one by one. Elizabeth Bishop seems to be one of those people who is touched by the liveliness of music.
Bishop shows just how magical music is when she says "There is a magic made by melody". The way the author praises music shows that it heals her; music heals her "fretful, feeling fingertips", her "bitter-tainted, trembling lips", and her "quivering limbs". She is telling how how the music is healing her past, the past that has caused exhaustion and stress throughout her life. Bishop lets the music flow through her and heal her to make her better again. Moving on in life and moving away from past failures is the only way to become better again.
Flowing through the powerful, yet calming, tone that Bishop provides, there is an ABBAACCADEFGFE rhyme scheme. Also, the poem is considered a sonnet, making the poem more flowing and formal. Even through this formal tone, it is apparent that she is trying to tell the readers something; she is trying to say that music can heal not only her, but everyone. Music can take away the struggle and tension and relieve themselves of the pain. The only thing that will be important through this is the future and the hopes in sight and nothing can be more apparent in the poem than Bishop's revival.
I Am In Need Of Music gives people a sense of hope, hope for a new beginning and hope for the near future to be bright.
